El Amazonas es sinónimo de misterio y aventura, ya que posee una vasta área inexplorada en la impenetrable selva que cubre el 70% del estado. Esta área ha sido habitada por más de una docena de etnias indígenas. El estado Amazonas representa un ambiente natural rico en una fauna exótica, flora y formaciones geológicas únicas.
Los estados Amazonas, Bolívar y Delta Amacuro comprenden el área denominada como Región de Guayana, debido a que su base geológica es el Escudo Guayanes, formado por algunas de las piedras más antiguas del planeta. Otra característica común que une a esta vasta región es que gran parte de su territorio es virgen y se encuentra habitado principalmente por indígenas. Algunas de estas etnias indígenas, las cuales han tenido más contacto con la civilización, hablan español y visten ropa occidental.
Los campamentos representan la principal opción de alojamiento en este estado. Muchos de estos campamentos han sido establecidos y operados por empresas turísticas y/o líneas aéreas, así como por empresarios. Los viajes a esta zona son ofrecidos a través de paquetes turísticos TODO INCLUIDO, los cuales le ofrecen al turista: el transporte, alojamiento, comidas, así como excursiones diarias con guías turísticos especializados.
Existen varios sitios de interés turísticos en el Estado Amazonas, principalmente ubicados cerca de su capital Puerto Ayacucho. Entre estos sitios están los siguientes:
Museo Etnológico de Puerto Ayacucho: proporciona una breve idea de la cultura de grupos indígenas de la región del Amazonas, incluyendo los Piaroa, Guajibo, Yekuana y Yanomami.
El Mercado Indígena: vende artesanía indígena. También existen una tiendas especializadas en este tipo de artesanía (Artesanías Amazonas y Bazar Corotería La Colmena) en donde usted puede encontrar cosas interesantes, tal vez algo costosas.
La Colonia de Coromoto: pueblo formado totalmente por indígenas, fundada por los Padres Salecianos.
El Pozo Azul: es una laguna de aguas tranquilas y transparentes, reliquia de la naturaleza, rodeada de exuberante vegetación. Ubicado a pocos kilómetros de Puerto Ayacucho.
El Cerro Perico: provee una buena vista sobre el Río Orinoco y el pueblo de Puerto Ayacucho. Cerca de este cerro se encuentra también el Cerro El Zamuro, mejor conocido como El Mirador, en donde se observan los rápidos que se forman a lo largo del río.
Otra atracción cerca de Puerto Ayacucho lo representa el Parque Tobogán de la Selva, el cual cuenta con un área de picnic diseñada alrededor de una grande y empinada piedra por cuyo alrededor corre el agua. Realmente es una roca que con el pasar de los años se pulió con las aguas, adquiriendo forma de tobogán. El mismo tiene varias cuadras de largo y termina en una piscina natural, donde uno puede sambullirse sin ningún peligro. Como se encuentra a pocos kilómetros de Puerto Ayacucho, se puede considerar como una de las principales atracciones que el turista no puede dejar pasar.
También es importante recordar que el Estado Amazonas es uno de los estados venezolanos que cuenta con varios parques nacionales, entre los cuales están: el Parque Nacional Cerro Autana, El Druída-Marahuaca, el Parima-Tapirapecó, el Parque Nacional Piedra El Cocuy, Parque Nacional Serranía La Neblina y el Parque Nacional Yapacama.

The Amazonas is synonymous with mystery and adventure, with vast areas still unexplored in the impenetrable rain forests covering 70 percent of the state (part of the Amazonian "lungs of the world"). This area is inhabited by more than a dozen indigenous ethnic groups, some so isolated their lives have changed little for thousands of years. This is a pristine natural environment rich in exotic fauna, flora and unique geological formations.
The southern states of Amazonas, Bolívar and Delta Amacuro comprise the area referred to as the Guayana Region, due to their geological base on the Guayana Shield, formed of some of the oldest rock in the world (pre-Cambrien rock 1.2 - 2.75 billion years old). The other common characteristic that unites this region is that the majority of its territory is nearly virgin and the principal inhabitants are indigenous people. Those who have had more contact with modern influences (either through the works of missionaries or the development of criollo settlements in their homelands) often speak some Spanish and wear western clothing.
Lodging is primarilli in camps which have been established by travel and tourism companies, or which have been developed by entrepreneurs. Trips to these destinations are almost always offered as all-inclusive packages which involve transportation (which may be by air, land or river - dependeing on the location and season), loadging, meals, and daily excursiones with local guides.
The state of Amazonas has several interesting sites for the tourism, mainly located near to Puerto Ayacucho. Among these places are:
Museo Etnológico de Puerto Ayacucho: it exhibits objects made by indigenous cultures from the Amazonas region. The museum is located in the Vicariato Apostólico de Puerto Ayacucho. It provides a brief idea of the culture of indigenous groups of this region, including the Piaroa, Guajibo, Yekuana and Yanomami.
The Indigenous Market: the indigenous groups from the region make different objects such as: baskety, purses, collars, bow, arrows, blowpipes and wood carvings. Here you can buy some of this handicraft. In the stores specialized (Artesanías Amazonas and Bazar Corotería La Colmena) you can find interesting objects.
Colonia de Coromoto: a town with an entirely indian population, founded by the Padres Salesianos.
Pozo Azul: it is lagoon with quiet and crystalclear waters, a relic from nautre, surrounded by exuberant vegetation. Located a few kilometers away from the Puerto Ayacucho.
Cerro Perico: it provides a good view on the Orinoco River and Puerto Ayacucho's town. Near this hill you can also find the Cerro El Zamuro. Here you can see the rapids formed along the river.
Other tourist places of interest that can be enjoyed in this state is the Tobogán de la Selva: a natural monument. It is rock formation that with the passing of the time and the eroding action of water turned into a natural toboggan, running several hundred meters of length and ending a natural swimming pool, into which bathers dive without and risk of danger. At the site you will find a lunch outlet. It is worth visiting it to enjoy an unforgettable weekend and it is located at a short distance from Puerto Ayacucho.
It is also important to remember that the Amazonas is one of the Venezuelan states that has several national parks, among which are: the National Park of Cerro Autana, the Druída-Marahuaca, the Parima-Tapirapecó, the Piedra El Cocuy, Serranía La Neblina and the National Park of Yapacama.
